Monopoly is probably one of the most popular classic board games in the world. In fact, having started in 1935, it’s probably one of the oldest board games still popular today.
In the rare case where you have never played Monopoly in your life, here’s how it works:
Players (usually 2 – 4) roll two six-sided dice to get around the board. Along the way, they buy and trade properties, develop their properties with houses and hotels and collect money through Chance and Community Chest cards.
Players who own properties get to collect rent money from other players. The player who goes bankrupt, i.e. run out of money, first, loses. The games goes on until one player is left and is declared the winner!
Still don’t get it? Here’s a video to give you a quick overview of how it works:
Monopoly is a game I’ve loved as a kid and continue loving today.
Though the game is really fun, another really cool aspect of Monopoly is that they come in many interesting editions.
If you’re a fan of Monopoly and would like to give Monopoly as a gift to someone you think might enjoy it too, I’ve got some really cool recommendations on the Monopoly sets you can buy them.
Interested? Let’s take a look at them:
Classic Monopoly
Before we look at the special edition Monopoly, let’s first take a look at the standard edition Monopoly so you can tell the difference between the standard and special edition sets. The difference between the sets is usually the pawns and the landmarks on the board.
So here’s how the standard monopoly looks:
The board from the Standard set are mainly locations in England.

#1. Monopoly Malaysia Edition
This is a Monopoly set that’s been made in conjunction with Tourism Malaysia:
In the Malaysia edition Monopoly set, the landmarks have been changed from the standard editions to feature landmarks in Malaysia likeIstana Negara, SIC, Stadthuys, and Batu Caves instead:
This would make a good addition to collectors of Monopoly or Malaysians who prefer seeing their own landmarks on the Monopoly board.
Actually, I think this would actually make a pretty nice farewell gift for a non-Malaysian friend who loves board games who isn’t staying in the country forever. What do you think?

#2. Monopoly Ultimate Banking Edition
The coolest thing about this Monopoly set is that it’s one of the first cashless Monopoly. Instead of cash, players get debit cards which can be updated using a Banker Card Reader Machine that can read the debit cards:
Released in 2016, this Monopoly Set even takes into account things like rent fluctuations and market crashes to simulate realistic turns in the economy that can affect a player’s wealth ?
This is a must-have not only because it’s the only cashless Monopoly set, but that I bet it will be a lot of fun!

#3. Monopoly Game of Thrones Edition
The Game of Thrones Monopoly edition is one of the most popular Movie-themed Monopoly edition. As the name suggests, the entire Monopoly board game is designed after the Game of Thrones theme:
This includes the board, the landmarks and Chance and Community card designs, as well as the pawns.
Check out these Game of Throne themed pawns:
Cool or what?

#4. Monopoly Luxury Edition
This is the Monopoly set you should get if you have a lot of money to spend and just want to surprise someone with something way above what’s normally expected.
The Monopoly Luxury Edition comes with an elegant wood cabinet with burled wood veneers on top of which the Monopoly board is integrated.
Unlike most Monopoly sets where the Banker money area is made of cheap plastic, you have an actual drawer you can pull out and push back in on this Monopoly set.

#5. Monopoly Junior Edition
The cutest thing about the Junior Edition is that instead of the standard pawns, this Junior Edition features cute animals instead! Just take a look at them:
While Hasbro designed the Junior edition with a smaller board and cuter graphics for kids, I think this would still make a great gift for adults. Imagine grown adults hovering over this small Monopoly board, moving little animal pawns around. I think you would have quite bit of fun!

#6. Monopoly Global Village Set
I found this pretty interesting Monopoly Set I think is not an official set because there are only counterfeit versions of it available.
Nonetheless, I think it’s still pretty cool so I decided to include it in this list. It’s none other than the Monopoly Global Village set.
As the name suggests, in place of the standard Landmarks, the board on this set features cities all over the world like Rio De Janeiro and Mexico City.
I have a feeling this is something that was made for people who love to travel.
I’d avoid buying this set for serious Monopoly board game collectors, but for people who see this just as something fun, I think it would make a great gift!

The Verdict: Which Monopoly Edition Should You Get?
The Monopoly board game is one of the most popular board games in the world. This makes it one of the best gifts for people who generally enjoy board games or card games. Other than that, Monopoly is also one of the games that are easy and fun enough for people to bond with one another over.
Having said that, if you are looking to buy a Monopoly set for somebody as a gift, which one should you go for?
I’d say the first thing you need to do is check if they are the type to play board games. If they normally prefer playing computer games or phone games over any kind of board game, it’s probably not a good idea to get a board game like Monopoly for them.
On the other hand, if you know that person to be up for anything and also enjoy board games, I’d recommend checking first to make sure that the board game that you are thinking of getting isn’t one that they already have.
Unless you are planning to get the Monopoly Luxury Edition, the prices for the Monopoly sets are generally affordable so you just have to select the ones that you think would interest the person you are gifting it too.
